Let’s Talk Fresh Fish!

Right so let’s talk fresh fish!  And why if you remember these simple and easy steps you will make choosing fresh fish sooooo much easier:

  1. buy your fish directly from a fish monger rather than pre-packed from a supermarket
  2. buy fish whole and ask your fish monger to fillet, scale and pin bone it for you
  3. Why?  Simple ….. buying fish whole is the easiest way to ensure the fish is actually fresh
  4. check to see if the fish’s eyes are clear (cloudy eyes are a good indication that the fish is not fresh)
  5. feel the fish, check the skin / body is free of bumps and bruises
  6. the fish should not smell fishy – rather smell clean and ‘of the ocean’
  7. where possible buy line caught fish (usually tastes better because the fish hasn’t been stressed and is more sustainable too)

Oh and don’t forget to ask your fishmonger “what’s in season”, so you can get your hands and tastes buds around fish that is eating well and usually at a sensible price too WIN WIN!

Enjoy!

My love of fresh seasonal produce shared and enjoyed around a big table with family and friends started as a young girl for me, and it's a love that has stayed with me my whole life. I am inspired to write recipes that are produce driven, recipes that enhance and showcase fresh local seasonal produce, created to be shared with family and friends. After all great food should be celebrated!
